Finding Joy Through The Eyes of a Child

Have you ever had a difficult time finding Joy? Have you gone through a difficult situation and struggled to find happiness? Have you ever had days that all you could do was put on a smiling face and act as everything was OK?

I have found myself in circumstances which caused deep pain, sorrow, grief and suffering. In 2008, I my husband chose to end his life. This was a very traumatic event for my family. I will never forget what happened that day. I recall putting on that mask, the smiling face, and pretending nothing happened. I cried myself to sleep many nights. I excused myself from anything that reminded me of what happened. I almost gave up.

I knew I could not allow this to consume my happiness. I prayed for God to help me overcome my sorrow. I returned to work and busied myself.

My daughter had come to stay with me, and it was then I realized I did have a reason to be happy. As she handed my granddaughter to me, I looked into her eyes and felt the weight of my heartache lighten. From that day forward, I chose to focus on what made me happy.

God tells us in scripture to focus on what is good and pure. Philippians 4:8 “whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable-if anything is excellent or praiseworthy-think about such things.”

I challenge you to find joy every day. Just look around many times it’s right in front of you!
